Atherton Tablelands crater lakes and waterfall circuit
West of Cairns the temperature drops, the lakes are old volcanoes, and a waterfall circuit only works if you pick three falls instead of twelve.

The Tablelands are what Cairns people do when they are tired of salt. Crater lakes, dairy country, waterfalls that run hard after rain and sulk in a dry October. Lake Eacham is the postcard crater: a swim if conditions allow, a circumnavigation walk, trees that make the Esplanade look like a car park.
A waterfall circuit is the other product. It is also how people waste a day in a car. Pick Millaa Millaa, one neighbour, and a lake. That is a trip. Twelve named falls is a brochure.
How to drive it from Cairns
Leave early. The range road is fine in the dry and slower in the wet. Yungaburra and Atherton have food that is not a servo pie if you time lunch. The lakes are not patrolled ocean beaches; read the signs for blue-green algae and do not assume every crater is a swimming hole.
If you only have one spare day from the Cairns depot, choose Tablelands or reef, not both. The reef day asks for your shoulders. The Tablelands ask for your patience with hairpin roads and other people’s hire cars.
What the uplands are for
Birds, platypus at dusk if you are lucky and quiet, coffee and tropical fruit that actually grew here. It is also a reminder that Tropical North Queensland is not only coast. The same weather system that cancels a boat can make a waterfall worth the drive.
Stay overnight if you want the lakes without the coach arrival. Pair the trip with when to visit Australia by region if you are trying to dodge both stingers and waterfall drought. And if you are heading south afterward, the Tablelands are a gentler last inland day than stacking another Cape trip on tired legs.
Questions from the desk
- Day trip or overnight?
- A day trip is possible. An overnight in Atherton or Yungaburra is kinder if you want lakes and waterfalls.
- Is it cooler than Cairns?
- Yes, often by several degrees. Pack a layer even in the dry season.

Mossman Gorge on Kuku Yalanji Country
Mossman Gorge is not a swimming hole you found on a map. It is a managed visit on Kuku Yalanji Country, and it is better when you treat the welcome as the point of the day.

The Daintree and Cape Tribulation at nature's pace
Cape Tribulation is where rainforest meets reef, and it is a poor place to keep a timetable. Cross the river, walk a boardwalk, and stay the night if you can.

The Great Barrier Reef without a package rush
A reef day from Cairns can be a cattle-boat or a careful look at one reef. The difference is departure time, passenger count, and whether you are allowed to be quiet in the water.
