Perth to Margaret River in a long weekend

The west coast does not owe you a three-week loop. A long weekend still works if you pick surf, forest or wine and refuse to do all three at full speed.

Perth is farther from Sydney than Sydney is from New Zealand, which is why east-coasters treat the west as optional. That is their loss. A long weekend cannot do the Kimberley. It can do a city swim, a south-west drive, and Prevelly's beach if the swell is friendly.

Stay a night in Perth if you fly in late. The city has a river, a coast, and a food scene that does not need your pity. Then go south. Margaret River town is a base. The beaches and the karri are the reason.

Do not collect the whole south-west

Cape Naturaliste or Cape Leeuwin, not both at a sprint. One cellar door if you like wine, not a crawl that wastes the coastline. Surfers Point is a look even if you do not surf. The family beach rules apply if children are involved: patrolled or calm water, not a hero break.

Read when to visit by region. The west has its own wind and whale seasons.

Staying and driving

Book the weekend before you land, especially in holiday weeks. The stay guide still holds. Distances look small and take longer after a tasting. Nominate a driver who is actually driving.

If you have a week, add Walpole or the southern forests. If you have two days, one beach and one good meal is a complete sentence.

Questions from the desk

Is the drive doable on Friday night?
Possible, unwise if you have already flown from the east. Leave Saturday dawn instead.
Surf, wine or trees?
Choose a primary. The others can be a look.
