The Great Ocean Road at a human pace

The Twelve Apostles are a car park with a masterpiece attached. The road is better when you sleep twice and walk once on a beach that is not in the brochure photograph.

Published · Updated

The Great Ocean Road was built by returned soldiers and is now driven by people who need to be back in Melbourne for a 7am flight. Those two facts explain the car parks. The Twelve Apostles at late morning are a masterpiece seen over someone else’s phone. Go earlier, or stay later, or accept that the point of the road is the road.

A human pace is two nights. Leave Melbourne after the worst of the truck hour. Walk a beach at Lorne or Apollo Bay that is not named in a listicle. The next day, the rock stacks, then inland a little if the Great Otway forest is wet enough to smell like itself. Read Melbourne laneways and day trips if you are pairing city and coast, and packing for an Australian road trip before you discover the hire car’s spare is a can of goo.

What to skip without guilt

You do not need every named lookout. You do not need a helicopter unless the weather is kind and the money is burning. You do need fuel, water, and a plan for the return inland if the coast road is slow. Koalas at Kennett River are a traffic jam with fur. Look, do not climb into the picture.

The Apostles sit in Port Campbell National Park. The cliffs calve. Fences exist because people kept dying for photographs. Stay on the platform. The wildlife ethics note is shorter than a coroner’s report.

Staying

Lorne is prettier and busier. Apollo Bay is a working harbour with better pies than it needs. Port Campbell puts you closer to dawn at the stacks. Holiday parks and motels fill on long weekends; the holiday calendar is not optional reading in Victoria.

If you have more days, keep going to the Coorong or cut up to the Grampians. If you have fewer, skip the road and walk the Mornington or Bellarine instead of collecting a sunset you will only see through glass.

Questions from the desk

Can I do it as a Melbourne day trip?
You can. You will remember the bus more than the cliffs.
One night or two?
Two. Lorne or Apollo Bay, then Port Campbell or Warrnambool.
